Samuel Rowlett: readymade
Samuel Rowlett: readymade
The Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy - 265 River St. Troy, NY 12180
Samuel Rowlett’s readymade exhibition will include drawings, large scale wall paintings, sculpture, video and interactive installations. In readymade, Samuel Rowlett explores the meaning of “objects” and ideas surrounding the “discovery” of significance in things that already exist. Objects, possessions, things, stuff, seemingly the detritus of a materialistic culture, and yet what makes this “stuff” so important to us? How do objects get wrapped up in the experience of memory? How is it that we seem to “upload” our memories and perhaps a bit of our identity into these things? Certain objects may even be irreplaceable because of this: a child’s favorite toy, a cherished heirloom, a keepsake from a remembered person, a present marking a milestone event. The manner in which we understand and ascribe significance and “sentimental value” to items that have very little intrinsic value may not be that far from how we understand our relationship to art and material culture.
